For too long colleges and universities have avoided looking critically at their teacher-preparation programs, choosing instead to be comfortable with "business as usual." We need a dramatic shift in the role of these institutions. It begins when the incoming freshman arrives on campus and does not end four years later. We need to "erase the slate" and redirect our focus on the real goal of achieving increased student achievement in our K-12 schools. My presentation will include a challenge to all of us to re-think who we are preparing science teachers for our nation's very serious task of significantly increasing student achievement and a roadmap for successful change.
