Our center met weekly from September through May.
We created a wiki at: http://ndquarknet.wikispaces.com for teacher communication and sign-ups. We had ~5 students participate in Masterclass 2008 for a day in March. This effort was led by mentor Dan Karmgard. We welcomed and learned about the graduate students in the Notre Dame extended Research Community (NdeRC), an NSF GK-12 program initiated and primarily written by the teachers.
During the summer, 15 high school teachers and 14 high school juniors took part in research from four to eight weeks. They were funded through QuarkNet and Research Experience for Teachers. Most of the teachers were from the local area, although we also had teachers from Florida, New York, New Jersey and Michigan. They participated in projects involving scintillating and waveshifting materials, cosmic ray detectors of various configurations, CMS e-Lab data Monte Carlo data analysis, photosensors – PMTs & SiPMs, astrophysics and the use of the new Jordan Hall of Science Digital Visualization Theater workstation we have at QuarkNet . We also held QuarkNet Week focusing on doing experiments in the new modern physics lab on campus--especially the experiments done that lead up to the modern era of particle physics.
