We have two meetings beginning June 1, 2008 and will have at least one more. The first meeting was on June 28 at Maryknoll High.School. Kris Whelan gave a QuarkNet update and described plans for the new Maui detector. There were also reports on the Punahou and BYU-Hawaii detectors as well as on the first data from the Windward Community College detector. Peter Grach gave a brief report on some online resources. The second meeting was the new physics teacher workshop on August 9 at Punahou High School. The leader was Derek Minakami and teachers Johannes Adams, Jeanine Nakakura, and Selene Cadirao also participated. The main focus for this workshop was learning about forces. There was also an opportunity to see the Punahou detector, and Mike Jones gave a brief QuarkNet overview during lunch. Six new teachers (five physics and one physical science) attended and gave positive comments about the workshop. The next meeting is in early October.
Currently we have nine active Hawaii teachers as follows: Johannes Adams, Punahou H.S.; Selene Cadirao, Maryknoll H.S.; Mimi Dang, Sacred Hearts Academy; Peter Grach, Kamehameha H.S.; Jacob Hudson, St. Andrew's Priory & Windward C.C.; Keith Imada, Maui H.S.; Derek Minakami, Kailua H.S.; Jeanine Nakakura, Roosevelt H.S.; Mike Weber, Brigham Young University-Hawaii.
We hope that a few of the teachers from the new teachers workshop will join in the future. One of Peter Grach's students plans to use some Hawaii data for a science fair project. At least two Maui High School students have been working with the detector which will be moved to the summit of Haleakala in October. We hope to get more high school students involved--particularly from Kahuku High School which is near the BYU-Hawaii detector.
