Our Masterclass 2008 was held at Northeastern University on March 15, 2008. Students from three local high schools (Medford H.S.: Mike Wadness, Roxbury Latin: Rick Dower, and Needham H.S.: Mike Hirsh) participated in exercises designed to introduce them to modern high energy experiment. The morning was spent on introductory talks by Mike Wadness (Medford) and Professor George Alverson of the Northeastern high-energy particle physics group and the afternoon was devoted to a tour of the physics labs at the University, measuring data from the LEP-era, and a comparison with data measured at other QuarkNet centers. Plans are currently underway for Masterclass 2009.
The Northeastern group (Professors George Alverson, Emanuela Barberis, and Darien Wood) and Professor Ulrich Heintz of Boston University coordinate with local teachers at periodic meetings, which have recently been hosted at Roxbury Latin School by Rick Dower. At the latest meeting, there was a good session on the summer activities of the high school teachers (including a visit to the Perimeter institute and leading a group measuring data from NASA's Phoenix Lander). Professor Alverson gave a short presentation on the current status of the LHC program.
