This item is Part 1 of a two-part experiential learning activity for beginning physics students relating to the universal law of gravitation.  This scenario involves Spacecraft Galilei, which is orbiting Iris, a planet with a smaller radius and lower mass than Earth.  Students must determine the acceleration at orbital height and the force exerted on Galilei in orbit. They will then calculate the gravitational acceleration on the surface of the planet, the force exerted by the planet on a measuring instrument, and the time it takes for that instrument to fall to the planet's surface.  Allow two hours

In keeping with Problem-Based Learning (PBL) pedagogy, students will separate useful from irrelevant data, then collaborate to apply physics in finding solutions.

This resource includes a printable student manual and links to background information on the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) instructional method.  Registered users may also access a teacher's guide.
