This interactive simulation models a velocity selector, an instrument used in accelerator mass spectrometry. The velocity selector consists of uniform electric and magnetic fields, perpendicular to one another. Either field can be turned on or off as the user controls mass and initial velocity of the particle, charge, and magnitude/direction of the fields. Turn both fields on and observe the behavior of the particle. Under what circumstances will it travel through the region undeflected?

A set of accompanying questions guides users in understanding the relationship between the fields.

This velocity selector model was created using the Easy Java Simulations (Ejs) modeling tool. It is distributed as a ready-to-run (compiled) Java archive. Ejs is a part of the Open Source Physics Project and is designed to make it easier to access, modify, and generate computer models.  Additional Ejs models can be found by searching ComPADRE for Open Source Physics, OSP, or Ejs.
