This applet demonstrates the technique for detecting extrasolar planets through measurements of the Doppler shift of spectral lines of the star due to the star's reflex motion. The applet generates randomized data of the Doppler velocity representing observations of a planetary system. The object of the game is to adjust the parameters of the orbit so that the Doppler curve will fit the specified data. The user can control the semi-major axis, eccentricity, inclination, node angle, planet mass and the phase.
This is part of a larger collection of applets by STEM Colorado focused mostly on topics in astronomy. Please note that this resource requires at least version 1.4.2_06 of Java.
