This applet shows a ray diagram demonstrating Snell's Law and Total Internal Reflection. A point source is in a medium with an unknown index of refraction and rays from the source enter a second medium with a smaller index of refraction (air).  The user can adjust the position of the source and the angle of the rays, and the applet shows the bending of the rays as they enter the air.  Positions and angles can be measured on the applet. The challenge for this applet is to determine the index of refraction of the first medium.

This is part of a large collection of Physlet-based (Physics Java Applet) illustrations and tutorials covering introductory physics.
