Galaxy Rotation with Dark Matter

written by Armando Pisani

The Galaxy Rotation with Dark Mater model shows that the actual rotation of spiral galaxies cannot be accounted for by visible matter alone. Newtonian dynamics allows us to compute the amount of additional matter, that we call "dark", needed to compute correctly the observed galaxy rotation curve. Here we use a simple model to simulate the galaxy rotation curve and the distribution of visible matter (namely, stars) within the galaxy. It is possible to vary the parameters of the dark matter distribution in order to improve the interpretation of the rotation of the galaxy.

The Galaxy Rotation with Dark Mater model was created using the Easy Java Simulations (EJS) modeling tool.  It is distributed as a ready-to-run (compiled) Java archive.  Double click the ejs_astro_GalaxyRotation.jar file to run the program if Java is installed.
