Millbrook is excited to offer a 12-day workshop that introduces educators to teaching using Modeling Instruction with an emphasis on either Biology or Physics.

Millbrook adopted Modeling Instruction while making the transition to teaching the Physics-Chemistry-Biology sequence beginning in 2010. As a boarding school situated in the bucolic Hudson Valley, we are ideally suited to house, feed and inspire science teachers interested in this professional development. Attendees are invited to room in dormitories on campus and eat in the dining hall while here. Space is limited.

Conceptual Physics
* Matt Dilley (6 years experience as a physics modeler, Science Department Chair at Millbrook School)
* Kathy Malone (17 years experience with modeling, Einstein Fellow at the NSF, in spring 2014 a Postdoc working on Model and design based biology curricula at the University of Pittsburgh.
      Units : Energy, Skills of Science

Biology
* Christine Dilley (Biology and Chemistry teacher at Millbrook School)
* Angela Gard (BS, MEd., NBCT, Modeling Science Instructional Coach, AMTA-President elect in 2014)
     Units: Experimental Design, Classification of Life, Evolution

These workshops are open to all high school science teachers worldwide. Students preparing to teach science, and college faculty, are welcome.

Modeling Instruction is useful for science teaching at any level, and key concepts of kinematics and Newtonian mechanics are directly relevant to all sciences.

Goals
Modeling Workshops are intensive 2- to 3-week summer courses with these goals:
1. educate teachers in use of a model-centered, guided inquiry method of teaching, and improve content understanding at the same time,
2. help participants integrate computer courseware effectively into the science curriculum,
3. help teachers make better use of national resources for science education,
4. establish electronic network support and a learning community among participants,
5. strengthen local institutional support for participants as school leaders  in science education.

Objectives
The main objective  is to acquaint teachers with all aspects of Modeling Instruction and develop some skill in implementing it. To that end, teachers are provided with a fairly complete set of written curriculum materials to support instruction organized into coherent modeling cycles. The physical materials and experiments are simple and quite standard, already available in any reasonably equipped classroom.

To develop familiarity with materials necessary to fully implement them in the classroom, teachers work through activities, discussions and worksheets, alternating between student and teacher modes. Throughout the course, teachers are asked to reflect on their practice and how they might apply the techniques they learn in the course to their own classes.

Modeling Instruction is aligned with the eight science practices outlined in the NRC Framework for K-12 Science Education (2011), the foundation for the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

Millbrook is a lovely location! About 15 miles NE of Poughkeepsie (which is halfway between New York City and Albany).

Poughkeepsie has a regional airport.
Other Prerequisites: Prerequisite for the physics workshop: 1 semester of college physics. The workshop is for
*  high school physics and physical science teachers and
*  those who intend to begin teaching high school physics or physical science next year.
Post-secondary physical science faculty are welcome, too.

Similarly for the biology workshop, only substitute "biology" for "physics".
