written by Ron Henderson, Gay Stewart, and Cody Sandifer
There is a pressing need for high school physics teachers across much of the country, and efforts have been championed by both PhysTEC and UTeach to help meet this need. Representatives from three universities with physics departments that have been funded by PhysTEC, and that are also UTeach replication sites will share their experiences. Because the number of years of involvement with PhysTEC and UTeach vary between the sites, each university has approached this union from a different perspective. Participants in this workshop should expect to hear what best practices from each of these programs have contributed most to the goal of producing a greater number of highly qualified high school physics teachers. Some of the particular topics to be discussed will include: ways to recruit future teachers, relationships with colleges of education and local school districts, the responsibilities of a UTeach Master Teacher compared with the roles of a PhysTEC Teacher in Residence, and the most important courses that a physics department offers.
