Over the past 6 years, the STEM Teacher and Researcher (STAR) Program has provided 290 paid summer research internships at federal research facilities (Department of Energy, NASA, NOAA, and NOAO) to 230 pre-service science and math teachers. Pre-service teachers from the California State University system and/or affiliated with an NSF-funded Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program have been eligible to participate in the program. Each STAR Fellow is paired with a research mentor in an authentic research experience spanning 9 weeks and produces a research poster presented at the lab site and at a STAR Closing Conference. STAR Fellows also participate in weekly seminars facilitated by a master teacher and university faculty in science or math education. These weekly seminars focus on the translation of insights gained through the STAR experience into classroom practice. Evaluation results indicate significant increases in the following: commitment to and prestige for the teaching profession, development of teacher-researcher identity, and connection to the community of professional research practice. Research into the classroom practices attributed by STAR Fellows to their summer experience also demonstrates strong connections to the scientific and engineering practices outlined in the Framework for K-12 Science Education.
