Department of Physics, Atmospheric Sciences and Geoscience includes three programs, BS Degrees in Physics, Meteorology, and Earth System Science with 62 students in all three programs. This department has been very active in PK-12 teacher training and teacher professional development since 1993. Through the Mississippi Academy for Science Teaching, Project MAST, which was funded by Missippippi Department of Education in 2004, we have provided professional development in science content mainly physical science for about 300 middle school teachers from central Mississippi. This project will continue to serve middle school teachers till 2010. Furthermore, Project MAST has been expanded to include high school teachers in the State of Mississippi. The high school component is funded by National Science Foundation for 5 years, which is currently includes 30 teachers for professional development and five physics education majors on full scholarship to become physics/physical science teachers. The physics and physical science education are new concentrations for students interested in becoming physics /physical science teachers. Physical Science Education is the only one in the state.
