The success of the Adolescent Education Physics (AEPHYS) program at SUNY Oneonta results from a close collaboration between the Physics and Astronomy and Science Education faculty via early engagement and committed mentoring of AEPYS students.
The program consists of a strong physics core supplemented by education courses and integrated pre-service experiences. In addition to classroom observations and teaching (often with program alumni), pre-service experiences include independent science research, community outreach in STEM, classroom observations in urban school systems and independent development of general physics laboratory experiments.
AEPHYS majors have enthusiastically played a critical role in numerous STEM outreach events to the campus and local community. Recently, students have contributed to the campus’s Science Discovery Center (a 3000 square foot hands-on physical science museum), a video-conference with the crew of the International Space Station, a middle school Lego Mindstorm Workshop, annual nano-technology celebrations, the college’s planetarium and an annual STEM camp held on campus. The students clearly relish developing their understanding of physics by sharing their knowledge with a receptive audience.
As well as encouraging and supporting student participation in the above STEM outreach, the college’s Noyce program has provided students with opportunities to observe STEM classes in urban environments (e.g., New York City) and academic scholarships. It has played a significant role in attracting students to the AEPHYS program (including four of those listed above) in recent years.
We have created an environment where students, in close partnership with faculty mentors, are active participants in their development as physicists and teachers.
