We developed an education option in 1994. It attracts perhaps one or two students a year, on average. Students pursuing this option take a course on secondary education at Claremont Graduate University (historically numbered Ed. 170G) and are then placed in an internship at a local public secondary school (typically Claremont High School, but not always). In that internship they first observe a science or math teacher, help in the classroom, develop one or more units, and deliver them under the supervision of the classroom teacher. They also write a 10-20-page reflection on their experiences and make a presentation to the department at the end of the year during our Presentation Days program.
We have met with other institutions in Claremont in an effort to open lines of communication and to raise students' awareness of teaching as a worthy option for their consideration.
