PhysTEC Topical Workshop: Pedagogical Content Knowledge Workshop Sessions

PCK Workshop Sessions

What is physics PCK?

9:00 AM - 12:00 PM on Monday, Apr 19, 2010

A discussion of the components of physics PCK and ways to help pre-service teachers develop understanding of those components.

Lunch

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM on Monday, Apr 19, 2010

Mock lessons from Rutgers courses “Development of Ideas in Physical Science” and “Teaching Physical Science”

1:00 PM - 3:30 PM on Monday, Apr 19, 2010

Participants will act as students in the lessons taught by pre-service teachers (examples of microteaching).  After each lesson there will be a discussion relating the lesson to the PCK components.

Coffee break for discussions and reflections

3:30 PM - 4:30 PM on Monday, Apr 19, 2010

Class: “Multiple Representations in Physical Science”

4:30 PM - 7:00 PM on Monday, Apr 19, 2010

Participants will attend one of the bimonthly meetings for program graduates, participate in the discussion and ask questions.

Dinner

7:00 PM - 7:45 PM on Monday, Apr 19, 2010

Meeting of program graduates (NJ physics teachers)

7:45 PM - 9:30 PM on Monday, Apr 19, 2010

Participants will attend one of the bimonthly meetings for program graduates, participate in the discussion and ask questions.

Clinical practice (teaching experiences)

9:00 AM - 12:00 PM on Tuesday, Apr 20, 2010

Through discussions with faculty and students, participants will learn about the multiple teaching experiences in the Rutgers program and what makes them effective.  An essential component is close cooperation between physics and education. Participants will begin devising their own course or program to help physics teachers at their institution to develop physics PCK.

Lunch

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM on Tuesday, Apr 20, 2010

Summary and reflection

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM on Tuesday, Apr 20, 2010

Participants will summarize what they learned during the workshop and reflect on the elements of the Rutgers program that seem useful in designing their own course or program.

Class: “Teaching Physical Science” - optional

4:30 PM - 7:30 PM on Tuesday, Apr 20, 2010

Participants can attend a class meeting (and participate as students) and after that reflect on the observation.
