Abstract Title: Development of Novice Teachers’ Views of Students Ideas as Productive and Resourceful
Abstract: In the Learning Assistant (LA) Program at Seattle Pacific University, novice teachers' perspective of student ideas expanded to include viewing these ideas as sensible and as productive starting places for instruction.  Our research suggests plausible mechanisms that foster this expanded view.  We propose that articulating teaching values that prioritize student reasoning, searching for "kernels of correctness" in student thinking, and negotiating curricular knowledge promote this particular attention towards student ideas.  We use evidence from the LAs' teaching reflections to illustrate a causal link between the shift and the mechanisms we pose.
