| Abstract Title: | Textbook Design: An Exploration of Pedagogical Properties |
|---|---|
| Abstract: | Textbooks can be effective pedagogical tools for learning a discipline. Indeed the primary function of a textbook is as the principle tool for self-learning. But what is the pedagogy of writing a textbook? Can we design a text to maximize learning? What are the properties of a textbook that frame the learning environment? What is taken into account when we determine the fit of a textbook? Pedagogical properties of several textbooks will be examined and a possible framework for the characteristics of effective texts will be presented. |
