| Abstract Title: | It Is Never Too Early: Exposing First Graders To Physical Science |
|---|---|
| Abstract: | Science is an integral part of our everyday lives and it is important that we continue to study it. To ensure this, we need to get kids interested in science at a young age so that they hopefully choose it as a future career path. In an effort to promote science, we presented an event at an elementary school with 104 first graders. The event was two hours long and contained 13 different interactive demos and short physics activities. A pair of a future elementary school teacher and physics major led each station. After the event, the students were asked to draw an image of the event and write about their experiences using six sentences. In order to discover the impact of this event on these students, we studied each journal entry, analyzed the context of students' sentences, and looked at the frequency that each concept was mentioned. This poster will present our findings and show in which ways this event impacted kids interest, knowledge and attitude about science. |
