Abstract Title: The Role of Inference in the Problem Solving about Friction
Abstract: Frictional force is a very difficult concept for students to understand; even university students have difficulties in learning friction. We theoretically discussed the importance of inference in understanding dynamics related to friction. Furthermore, we conducted a survey to investigate university students' concepts concerning frictional force. By analyzing the result, we found evidence that lack of inference in the reasoning process could create difficulties in problem solving about friction. Our result suggests that the role of inference must be emphasized in the instruction of friction.
