Light opens up a world of sound for the deaf

A research team at Northwestern University in Chicago is working on developing cochlear implants based on using INFRARED light to stimulate neurons in the inner ear. Research on  deaf guinea pigs shows that such stimuli results in information sent to the brain comparable to the information sent by hearing guinea pigs.
