She completed her doctorate with a dissertation focused on college student experiences in 2003 at the College of William and Mary's School of Education Educational Planning,  Policy and Leadership Program.

Carlane was also the Director of Outreach for the Physics Department at Hampton University with the primary emphasis of working with undergraduate and graduate students and working with K-12 schools on physics related programs.
