I am preparing to teach an advanced lab course and intend to teach statistical analysis. I want to introduce a freeware statistical package. I've been told about Root and R but am unfamiliar with either. I was brought up on Origin but feel I can learn either software and want one that is best suited for an advanced physics lab.

Geiger w/ variable voltage + interface? Cheapo route...

Hi folks, here is a link to a cheapo interface using two transistors+discrete and a ttl buffer to RS232 that goes all the way from (GM) tube to (CRT) tube. We have used this and the included software (using Linux) to do basic counting (lifetime, etc) and coincidence experiments (cosmic rays, positronium from Cu64) with good effect here at YSU. Each pulse is timestamped and coincidences are synthetic; does up to three channels simultaneously.
