||BFY, the prequel: observations and experiences from the first year laboratory
||Over the past years a number of observations and studies have been carried out with regard to the first year laboratory. Three broad areas have emerged that impact on the way students experience what is often their first introduction to experimentation. The first is having a guiding philosophy that frames the laboratory course as a whole so that the curriculum is not simply a disjoint set of unrelated activities. The second is the way in laboratory tasks are framed so that sense-making is encouraged while the third area pertains to what is expected from students as "output" from the activities. The talk will briefly discuss each of these aspects and also hone in on report writing and the data analysis framework as two important issues within these three nested framings.
