Abstract Title: W33 - Advanced Laboratories in Acoustics and Ultrasonics
Abstract: This workshop will consist of three experiments with the following descriptive titles. 1.Acoustic Velocity, Impedance, Reflection, Transmission, Attenuation, and Acoustic Etalons. 2.Experiments in Acoustical Refraction and Diffraction. 3. An introduction to Acousto-Optics. The experiments use acoustical transducers that operate in the frequency range 8 to 18 MHz and are excited by either signal pulses or bursts, depending on the experiment. Acoustical properties of water and a variety of solids are measured, elastic properties of the solids are calculated from these, and several types of devices are analyzed. Single slit and grating diffractors, refractors, thin plates, acoustic etalons, and an acousto-optic modulator are some of the devices. Students doing these labs will become more familiar with the following areas of physics: ultrasonic wave propagation, elastic properties of solids, acoustical and optical etalons, phonon-photon interaction, and acousto-optics.
