Abstract Title: Physics project labs for advanced undergraduates at Caltech
Abstract: For the past two years we have offered a program of "design-and-build" labs in our Senior Physics Laboratory, ph77. In it, students go through the process of quantitative design for a project, then building and testing, all in the course of a ten-week term. Topics include ion trapping, magnetic levitation, quantized conductance, thin-film deposition (with associated vacuum-system engineering), and thermoelectric temperature control. We report student progress and results of this work.
