The Consortium for Upper-Level Physics Software (CUPS) developed a comprehensive series of book/software packages in the mid-1990s for a range of upper-division physics and astronomy courses. The international group consisted of 27 physicists with backgrounds in the research, teaching, and development of instructional software.
The series of nine books covers:
* classical mechanics * electricity and magnetism * astrophysics * modern physics * nuclear and particle physics * quantum mechanics * solid state physics * thermal physics * wave and optics
Computer simulations are provided in executable form with each book. Although they can be run without reading the text, the text is necessary to achieve an understanding of the underlying physics and for exploring alternative ways to use the programs. The individual chapters and computer programs cover "mainstream" topics that are found in the standard textbooks for each course. However, because they are intended to be used as supplementary texts, there are topics missing that the standard texts would include.
