AFCEA Iowa Chapter STEM Scholarship

The Iowa Chapter of The Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association is awarding three scholarships to students who are pursuing STEM.  This scholarship is open to U.S. citizens who are upcoming sophomore, junior or senior students with at least a 3.0 GPA.

Amount: $500.00/semester and limited to three recipients each academic year

Valparaiso University in Indiana has a post on their website indicating they have a Physics & Astronomy scholarship available for their incoming students majoring in Physics and more information is reflected below. If you are eligible the deadline to apply is February 11th.

Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana has received funding from The National Science Foundation and is offering a 'PRISM Scholarship' for Saint Mary's College students in the classes of 2016 and 2017 who demonstrate exceptional motivation, ability, and enthusiasm for science, mathematics, or engineering, i.e., STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.  St. Mary's does offer a Physics major. So, if you are considering colleges, this may be worth a look!  The total scholarship award is up to $26,500 per student distributed as $6,500 during the sophomore year and $10,000 during each of the junior and senior years.

Who can apply?

The Alliance/Merck Ciencia (Science) Hispanic Scholars Program offers a $2,000 Scholarship for Hispanic college students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories and Puerto Rico pursuing a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field major.  This is a one-time $2000 scholarship and 25 will be awarded in the Spring of 2013.

Baldwin Wallace University

Chandler Gilbert Community College located in Chandler, Arizona:

Limited to Chandler Gilbert Community College students, but provides up to $3,000 per semester.  This scholarship applies to Physics majors, among others. It appears financial need must be demonstrated.  The deadline for the Spring semester is Friday, January 4, 2013.

The Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) is offering a 2013-2014 Scholarship and Fellowship Program.  Each academic year the VSGC awards substantial sholarships and fellowships to students attending Virginia Space Grant member institutions and majoring in a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) field.

Two programs provide scholarships to students actively engaged in a research project with a faculty member and they are as follows:

1. The Undergraduate STEM Research Scholarship Program -

This program provides a one-year scholarship of up to $8,500 to undergraduate students.


2. The Graduate STEM Research Fellowship Program -

This program provides $5,000 in support to graduate students. The Graduate Fellowship is add-on support for students and is renewable for one year.

Sperry Goodman Scholarship - Seattle University

This scholarship was established with a one million dollar gift from the estate of Sperry Goodman in 1999.

The scholarship is for College of Science and Engineering incoming freshmen for the following majors:

*Electrical and Computer Engineering,  
*Physics or
*Computer Science.

Financial need is considered.

In 1969, Sperry Goodman earned his master's degree in electrical engineering from
Seattle University. Mr. Goodman worked for and made groundbreaking contributions
to the Boeing Company in the field of electrical engineering.

This $5,000 scholarship is renewable for a second year as long as the recipient
maintains a 3.0 cumulative GPA in one of the above majors.

The Science, Engineering and Mathematics (SEM) Area was awarded a competitive, four-year, $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) for "ACCESS Engineering" (Achieving Community College Excellence, Success, and Scholarship in Engineering).

The project will continue to receive funding through a one-year, no-cost extension for spring 2013.

The NSF S-STEM program was established by the National Science Foundation in accordance with the American Competitiveness and Workforce Improvement Act of 1998. The Act reflects the national need to increase substantially the number of American scientists and engineers. ACCESS Engineering will provide over 150 scholarships to engineering students over the grant period. The project promotes full-time enrollment, academic achievement, and successful transfer and completion of a bachelor's degree in engineering. The Montgomery County Department of Economic Development is a key partner in this project.  Additionally, the University of Maryland College Park and George Washington University will provide programs to better prepare students to transfer to a school of their choice.

There are a limited number of scholarships.  The selection process is competitive and the award will be based on the amount of financial need, not to exceed $3,200 per year. Applications are available now for spring 2013 scholarship consideration.  The deadline to submit all required materials for Spring 2013 Application is Monday, December 17, 2012.  No late applications will be considered. PSMS Starters Scholarship - California State University Long Beach:

If you aren't a student at CA State Long Beach (CSULB) but are considering universities, this university has a scholarship available which might make CSULB worth consideration as you make your college choices.   This scholarship is the PSMS Starters Scholarship and for CSULB students the deadline to apply is 11/16/12.  This scholarship applies to CSULB Physics majors. The Scholarship can be used for a course leading to certification, a certification preparation program as in the Cisco week-long "Boot Camp Prep Course", laboratory course or a certification test fee. Courses taken from Learning Tree or any of their counterparts are considered valid courses for this scholarship.

Certification applicants must be young professionals (age 40 or under) currently employed in a field related to communications, computer science or electronics.

Graduate Students
In addition to the online application, other required documents include: current transcript issued by the school Registrar's Office and at least two letters of recommendation from relevant faculty or employer.

Proof of registration (including dates of course or date when registered) must be submitted. Utah State University is offering a  STEM Teaching scholarship of $5000 per academic year.  Although you have to be a junior or senior level student at Utah State, this may be of interest if you attend or are planning to attend Utah State.  GPA must be a 3.5 and applicants must have two letters of recommendation from faculty.

Massachusetts Bay Community College has been awarded a $347,000 scholarship grant by the National Science Foundation.

Two awards recognizing outstanding achievements in Physics may be presented each year, one to a student from a Ph. D. granting institution and one to a student from a non-Ph. D. granting institution. The award to the recipient(s) consists of $5,000 plus:

*A certificate citing the work and school of the recipient

Each of the finalists in this annual competition will receive an honorarium of $2,000 and a certificate as an Apker award Finalist.

About the Program

The Kent State University Scholarships for Broadening Participation in the Sciences will annually provide 21 undergraduate scholarships, averaging $5,000 each to promising science students. The scholarships will be awarded to students who are financially disadvantaged thereby enabling them to pursue a full-time program of studies that can be completed in four years. Scholarship awardees will be linked academically through a shared interest in computational and quantitative approaches to problem solving in the natural and physical sciences. The scholarship is renewable each year and available from academic year 2012/13 until 2017/18.

A main goal of this program is to increase the diversity in the sciences. As such we highly encourage students from underrepresented groups to apply. Astronomical Society of Kansas City Astronomy Scholarship Fund

Deadline: June 15, 2012

Scholarship available to students who have expressed an interest in studying Astronomy, or a related field. This is limited to students accepted into the Department of Physics at University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Scholarship support must be used for tuition and/or class-related materials (i.e. textbooks, lab fees, equipment).

The NHCSL Scholarship program is specifically designed to help Hispanic college students majoring in targeted STEM fields.

NHCSL will award scholarships to Hispanic college students in four states: California, Illinois, New Jersey and New York. The SanDisk Foundation recently announced the creation of the SanDisk Scholars Fund.  This is a $1 million needs based scholarship program that supports underrepresented students who wish to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

Maryland Space Grant Consortium - 2012-2013 Scholarship Application

The Maryland Space Grant Consortium was established in 1989 under NASA's National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program.

The Maryland Space Grant Consortium offers financial support to Maryland residents or graduates of Maryland high schools who are enrolling as an undergraduate student in an affiliate institution who otherwise might not be able to attend college and who wish to pursue a career in math, science, engineering, or technolog, that is related to aerospace or will lead to an aerospace career.

Awardees must be U.S. citizens enrolled as full-time students at a Maryland Consortium campus. Consortium campuses include: The Johns Hopkins University, Morgan State University, Towson University, University of Maryland-College Park, University of MD Baltimore County, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and Hagerstown Community College.

Awards vary and must be used for tuition, books, fees and room and board.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Maryland resident or graduate of a Maryland high school.

Full-time student majoring in (but are not necessarily limited to): the biological and life sciences, chemistry, geological sciences, physics and astronomy, engineering and computer science.

Dorothy Muzzey Scholarship-Loan Program

The recipient must be a declared major in Physics or Chemistry and must have completed 60 credit hours at UNI. PROGRAM OVERVIEW

1. Seniors in high schools throughout the United States who meet the eligibility requirements may apply annually for one of 250 four-year, achievement-based scholarships.

2. Approximately 2,200 applicants will be selected and notified by mail that they are Semifinalists around December 1. Semifinalists continue on to complete a secondary application, including essays, official transcripts, and two letters of recommendation due by mid-January. The Program Review Committee will select 250 Finalists to advance to the final interview phase and Finalists will be notified in mid-February.

3. In April, the 250 Finalists are invited to Atlanta for personal interviews held by a National Selection Committee representing outstanding leaders in business, government, education and the arts. 50 students are then designated as National Scholars and receive awards of $20,000 for college; 200 students are designated as Regional Scholars and receive awards of $10,000 for college.

This might work for a high school student or perhaps an undergraduate with a sibling age 18 or younger as of October 4, 2012. Despite the age requirement, this looks like a great opportunity for the right student.

The Davidson Fellows Scholarship awards $50,000, $25,000 and $10,000 scholarships to extraordinary young people, 18 and under, who have completed a significant piece of work.

The HSF/Marathon Oil Corporation College scholarship is currently open and the deadline to apply is November 1, 2011. Although I couldn't find a contact to write for permission to post this does appear to be a legitimate scholarship.  Here's the criteria:

Program Description

The HSF/Marathon Oil Corporation College Scholarship Program is a scholarship of up to $15,000 per year. Selected students may receive up to $15,000 for two academic years for a possible total award of $30,000.

Scholars will also be offered the opportunity to participate in a possible paid 8-10 week summer internship at various Marathon Oil Corporation locations. Scholars will also be paired a mentor from Marathon Oil Corporation.

Eligibility Requirements

Be of Hispanic American, African American, Asian Pacific Islander American, or American Indian/Alaskan Native heritage.

This scholarship is offered by the Society for Science & Imaging Technology and is available to FT undergraduate or graduate students who have completed 2 years of college. The scholarship will be awarded to an imaging science or engineering student(s) for use in continuing his/her studies.

Among applicable majors,  Aerospace, Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, Engineering Physics students may be possibilities for this scholarship.

Unfortunately, the website doesn't go into detail about the majors that may qualify, so it is up to you to determine by reading the information at the website and on the application as to whether there might a potential fit.  This is worth looking at since the website states the award is at least $1,000.  The deadline is October 1, 2011.

There are several scholarships being offered that either have limited details posted or for which I have not received permission to formally post.  So, please note the following:

1. The National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP) – I've posted several of the scholarships currently being offered by the NSBP, however, there are two more Physics scholarships available.  So, please visit the NSBP website at  http://www.nsbp.org/scholarships/ to review the Elmer S. Imes Scholarship in Physics and the Robert A. Ellis Scholarship in Physics.  The application deadline is January 13, 2012.

2. The USRA Scholarship Program provides college scholarships to students who have shown a career interest in the physical sciences or engineering with an emphasis on space research or space science education.  

An undetermined number of undergraduate scholarships are available in amounts up to $1,000. The McLucas Research Prize is $400. Scholarships are awarded for one year only, but recipients may re-apply for a second year. Students may apply for both the McLucas Prize and for a USRA Scholarship but will not be eligible to receive both awards in the same year.

Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for any USRA Scholarship, applicants must be full-time undergraduate students attending a four-year accredited college or university that offers courses leading to a degree in physical sciences or engineering. Applicants must have completed at least two (2) years of college credits by the time the award is received, and applicants must be U.S. citizens.

3. Georgia Engineering Foundation Scholarship –

For over 30 years, the Georgia Engineering Foundation has sponsored a program that awards college scholarships to worthy Georgia students who are preparing for a career in engineering or engineering technology. Since 1985, over 600 students have been awarded scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. In 2009, 39 awards were made available.

All scholarships are competitively awarded based on the student's demonstrated competence in academics, interest in developing a career in engineering, financial need, and school and community involvement.


Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible, a student must be interested in a career in engineering and be:

1) A U. S. Citizen;
2) A resident of Georgia; and
3) Enrolled in an engineering or engineering technology ABET-accredited program leading to a B.S., or graduate degree.

Description

To provide academic scholarships to students who have expressed an interest in studying Astronomy, or a related field, and have been accepted into the Department of Physics at University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Scholarship support must be used for tuition and/or class-related materials (i.e. textbooks, lab fees, equipment).

Requirements

Student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (both in overall courses and also in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Physics core courses [300-level or higher]).

Must be already engaged in the extensive study of Astronomy, Astrophysics or related fields.

The term "extensive study" means that the student will have completed at least 6 credit hours in Astronomy or Astrophysics at the 300-level or higher.

Here's one to tuck away for next year.  The ASM Materials Education Foundation offers a variety of scholarships, however, the deadline to apply is May 1 (which unfortunately is today).  So, for those of you who may be interested for next year, I'd recommend you check the following website later this year to see whether the Foundation renews the scholarships they currently offer:

The first scholarship with a deadline of April 29, 2011, is for female undergraduates and is the

The Marion VanNostrand scholarship shall be awarded to women who are declared majors in Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Engineering Technology (TAC/ABET programs), or Mathematics. Applicant must be an undergraduate student.

Applicants should have a demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to single women who have dependent children. Awardees must make satisfactory academic progress toward a degree.

Eastern Michigan University offers a National Science Foundation Scholarship.


The Department of Physics and Astronomy at EMU was awarded a NSF grant through the Scholarships for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics initiative.  The grant will award 4-year scholarships of up to $10,000 per year (that's up to $40,000 per student) for academically talented students who attend EMU and major in physics.  The scholarships are currently only for freshman enrolling at EMU in 2011 and 2012.

This scholarship program is designed to help you build your resume so that when you graduate from EMU with your degree in Physics, Physics Research or Engineering Physics, you will be "in demand".

OBJECTIVES

Introduced in 1990, the Collegiate Inventors Competition has recognized, rewarded, and encouraged hundreds of students to share their inventive ideas with the world. The Competition promotes exploration in invention, science, engineering, technology, and other creative endeavors and provides a window on the technologies from which society will benefit in the future.

ELIGIBILITY

Students must be enrolled (or have been enrolled) full-time in any U.S. or Canadian college or university at least part of the 12-month period prior to the date the entry is submitted. In the case of a team (maximum of four students), at least one member of the team must meet the full-time eligibility criteria.  The other team members must have been enrolled on a part-time basis (at a minimum) sometime during the 24-month period prior to the date the entry is submitted.

The committee of judges represents various fields, including mathematics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, information technology, materials science, and medicine.


JUDGING:

Entries are judged on the originality and inventiveness of the new idea, process, or technology. The entry must be complete, workable, and well articulated. Entries are also judged on their potential value to society (socially, environmentally, and economically), and on the scope of use.

AWARDS

Each year up to 12 finalists in Graduate and Undergraduate Divisions receive an all-expenses paid trip to present their work to a panel of expert judges in Washington, D.C. In 2010, the top Graduate prize was $15,000 and the top Undergraduate Prize was $10,000. Other prizes are awarded to select finalists. Academic advisors of each winning entry also receive a cash award.

NASA has a great opportunity for college students and that is to take part in the 2011 Space Tech Engineering Design Challenge. For this challenge, students are invited to design a technology that will help further space exploration and development.

Designs may relate to any of the following:

*Autonomous Operations;
*Entry, Descent and Landing;
*Human factors;
*Power/Propulsion including for operation in space and on other planetary bodies;
*Robotics (not related to in-situ lunar samples).

The HORIZONS Scholarship was established in 1988.  The purpose is to encourage
women to pursue careers related to the national security and defense interests of the
United States. The amount of the awards varies each year.

Applicants must meet the following criteria. No exceptions will be considered.

Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible; undergraduates must have attained
at least junior level status (60 credits).

The ACIL Scholarship Alliance is a division of the Independent Laboratories Institute.  They wish to ensure future generations of skilled employees for the laboratory testing community. ACIL offers academic scholarships up to $4,000. I wrote the AOE Foundation for permission to post their scholarships only to realize later they are more related to Engineering, Computer Science and/or Math students who are in programs that are accredited by ABET.  So, I figured I'd include this organization's scholarships here in hopes of helping a student like myself.  I am currently an engineering major, but I am a member of the Physics society because I love astronomy and enjoy Physics as well.  Anyway, here's their information:

Rings of Excellence Scholarship

Applicants for the Rings of Excellence Scholarship must be a member (active or
alumnae) in good standing in Alpha Omega Epsilon Sorority, or the child or
grandchild of a member who is also in good standing.  Husbands, brothers, sisters, nieces, or
nephews are not eligible to apply.  The daughters and sons of deceased members,
who were a member in good standing at the time of death, are eligible to apply.  Applicants
must be an undergraduate and majoring in engineering or technical science.  
Applicants must have an overall grade point average of 2.0/4.0 or equivalent.

Engineering and Technical Science Achievement Scholarship

Applicants for the Engineering and Technical Science Achievement Scholarship must
be a woman undergraduate majoring in engineering or technical science.  Applicants
must have an overall grade point average of 3.0/4.0 or equivalent.


Eligibility Requirements:

The applicant must be enrolled in, or accepted for enrollment, in an
undergraduate or graduate engineering or technical science degree program

I haven't had much luck in receiving permission to post scholarships that are
available from the various space consortium websites that I've come across.  

I've stumbled across enough of these to begin to hypothesize that each state
has a space consortium website which may offer scholarships.  One such scholarship
I just came across is referenced at the very end of this article for the state of
Maryland.  So, if you live in Maryland...be sure to review the scholarship information
at the end of this post.

Anyway, I followed my hunch on all of this and I have found that if you are looking
for scholarships, you should check out the following website:

Once you get to your state's consortium website, you should be able to determine
whether a scholarship is available.   For example, the scholarship I just stumbled
upon was for the Maryland Space Consortium's scholarship using Google.  However,
if you just click on the state of Maryland on the map, you'll be taken to Maryland's
Space Consortium (MSC) website.  The scholarship currently being offered by the
MSC website then can be found under the Programs tab by clicking on the
Undergraduate Scholarship program link and then clicking on the Undergraduate
Scholarship program application link.  Each website will be a little bit different but
you should be able to find the information fairly easily.

The ASU School of Earth & Space Exploration offers the SESE Scholarship in Earth & Space Exploratoin.  This is a sizable scholarship for $8,000 per year ($4,000 per semester); renewable for three additional years based on renewal criteria. Funds must be used toward educational expenses including tuition and fees, housing, books and other costs of attendance.

Application Process:
Students interested in being considered must be admitted to ASU and must also apply separately for the scholarship. The application process includes submission of a simple application form and the simultaneous submission of a one page essay (see essay details below). The National SMART Grant –

The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant, or National Smart Grant, is available during the third and fourth years of undergraduate study (or fifth year of a five-year program) to at least half-time students who are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant and who are majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, engineering or a critical foreign language; or non-major single liberal arts programs. The student must maintain a (GPA) of 3.0+ in course work required for the major. The National SMART Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.

How Much Can A Student Receive?

A National SMART Grant will provide up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study. The amount of the SMART Grant, when combined with a Pell Grant, may not exceed the student's cost of attendance. In addition, if the number of eligible students is would cause payment of the full grant amounts to exceed the program's appropriation in any fiscal year, then the amount of the grant may be reduced.

Eligible Students

• be Pell Grant-eligible during the same award year;
• be enrolled at least half-time;

The National Space Association – Dr. Robert H. Goddard Memorial Scholarship

The winner of the 2011 Goddard Scholarship, for the academic year 2010-2011, will be introduced to the nation's leaders in science, government and industry at the 54th Goddard Memorial Dinner, to be held on Friday, April 1, 2011. The National Space Club will pay travel and lodging costs so that the awardee will be able to attend the Dinner.  Applications for the 2011 scholarship are being accepted until Monday, January 3, 2011.

The Hertz Foundation offers Graduate Fellowships each year beginning in August and concludes the following March.  The application for the academic year 2011-2012 will become available on August 16, 2010.

I've been working hard to find scholarships for Physics and Astronomy students this summer.  In summers past I've managed to post quite a few scholarships but it seems this year there isn't much open to apply for over the summer.  So, it is going to be important for students to search hard early this fall for scholarships.

I suspect the economy has caused significant decreases in University endowment funds and that is possibly part of the problem.

I've taken time to write a lot of universities and organizations to introduce them to the Nucleus, but that in and of itself may not be enough.  I'd encourage students to be vigilant in their quest for scholarships by using the internet as a research tool on a regular basis this fall.

I wanted to share with you a little bit of my college story in hopes it will benefit some of you.  

I had a very challenging start as a freshman.  It began with great anticipation of what was to come but ended with me facing the decision to withdraw for medical reasons.  I was told by many folks on campus that I faced numerous difficult challenges; many more than the average freshman. Those challenges, just to name a few, were continued upper respiratory issues, a difficult roommate situation that took two months for the administration to resolve, a crashed laptop (lost a major project), and eventually a dislocated shoulder.  

At the time I withdrew, my father came down to pick me up and we spent the day meeting with college officials including financial aide.  We were told by financial aide that nothing would change with my scholarships once I was ready to return to school, but I would return on academic probation.  

I re-applied for admission in late February of 2009 after it was clear my shoulder was on the mend and my overall health had returned.  I was accepted for the fall 2009 semester and heard nothing further.  

I made several calls to both housing and financial aide in the Spring to try and get things moving in the right direction.  I also sent emails.  I heard nothing from housing and financial aide didn't give me much in the way of information either.  

So, my parents stepped in.  My mother emailed the housing director who passed the email onto a line staff member. That staff member wrote back to basically say, sorry Melanie missed the housing sign up in the spring and there is no housing left.  At that point my mother called the President's office and she was transferred to the Dean of Academic affairs.  She explained the pertinent details of what had transpired with me first semester and the Dean was very attentive as well as the information we'd just received about the lack of availability of housing.  Within the hour the Dean called my mother back and she was told that I'd have a spot on campus and not to worry.  It took another 25 days before I actually got my housing assignment, but thankfully I've got one.

About the time the housing issue was on the mend, I figured out there was a problem with my scholarships being reduced to next to nothing by having decided to log into my school account.  So again my parents stepped in. My mother decided to to craft a letter which my father & I fine tuned.  Again, the letter talked about some of the things that happened to me first semester and questioned the aide and scholarships I'd been awarded for the fall.   I sent the letter off certified return receipt requested and also sent a copy to the President's Office.  The letter asked for answers to our questions in writing (as I've learned the paper trail is integral).  Last evening the response came  and my financial aide package has been fully restored.

So, with regard to housing it was pretty clear someone dropped the ball after I was re-admitted. Rather than accept the answer that I'd missed the sign up period, we worked to find the 'right' person who could resolve the problem by going to the Preisident's office and inquiring as to who that person would be.  

Also, it was evident that the original financial aide was made based on what the staff saw on paper and likely nobody knew my story.  Once the financial aide office took my circumstances into consideration the aide package was restored.

So the lesson here is to advocate for yourself.  Find the right contact person, get your facts together and present your case calmly and without emotion.  It worked for me and Ive been given a second chance. I hope this might benefit one of you.

The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation was created to ensure that the United States would maintain its leadership in science and technology by supporting promising students in science and engineering.  


This foundation offers a unique scholarship opportunity in that candidates must be nominated by faculty members. Students may not directly apply for the scholarship.  The eligibility requirements do include the fact that candidates this opportunity is limited to students who attend one of approximately 19 cooperating colleges/universities, (but this is a good opportunity for those who may qualify).

17 awards are available and the deadline is April 15, 2009.

Reminder:  If you have not already applied for federal student aid for the 2009-2010 school year, you can do so by using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on the internet.  To apply online, copy the entire link and paste it into your Web browser:

At the FAFSA Web site, select the "Fill Out Your FAFSA" link and enter your identifying information.  If you've already completed your FAFSA for a previous school year, you will be given the option to pre-fill your FAFSA with much of your application data from last year.  In this case, you will need your Federal Student Aid PIN to access your 2009-2010 FAFSA on the Web application that is pre-filled.  If you forgot your PIN, you can request a duplicate by going to www.pin.ed.gov and selecting "Request a duplicate PIN."  

Keep in mind that in addition to federal student aid, in some circumstances you may also use the FAFSA to apply for aid from other sources, such as your state or school.  Please be sure to double check important state deadlines at www.fafsa.ed.gov under the "Before Beginning a FAFSA" link.  Also, check with your school's financial aid office for information about school deadlines.

Recently I posted an article about scholarship advice and I touched very lightly on scholarship scams.  However, I felt this topic deserved a little more attention.

While there may be some legitimate scholarship search services out there that charge a fee, here is what you can do to protect yourself:

If you are considering the idea of using a scholarship search service, ask your teachers, professors, counselors and advisors about specific services you are considering and whether they've heard of those services. Check with the local Better Business Bureau about complaints that may be on file for a specific service and also ask your fellow students about their experiences with scholarship search services.  

Beware of any services that:

*Guarantee a scholarship or make any similar promises
*Tell you that they have access to proprietary scholarship information
*State that they will apply for the scholarships for you
*Request payment in advance of providing you with bona fide results
*Pressure you to sign up right away.

If you are asked for money:

* Avoid paying application fees, award fees or any 'advance loan fees
*Be careful about giving out credit card information
* Remember you are a student in need of money so why would you be asked to part with money?  

Avoid responding to any unsolicited scholarship offers you receive including anything that states you are a finalist in something you never applied for in the first place.

I cannot tell you how to uncover all the scams, but I have learned how to spot some very worthwhile scholarships.

You can start by using some of the popular scholarship search sites like

Don't assume that just because a scholarship is listed at a fairly well respected site such as those listed above that it is not a scam.  As you find scholarships you feel may be a possible match for you, be sure to visit the scholarship website.   The scholarship website may give you a lot of clues about what is really going on.   Look for signs that the scholarship is legitimate by finding the answers to the following questions at the scholarship website:

*Does the website contain comprehensive contact information?
*What company or organization is sponsoring the scholarship and have I heard of it before?
*How many years in a row has the scholarship been offered and who are the past recipients?
*What does it take to apply for the scholarship?

If you visit the scholarship website and find that it merely asks you to fill in your contact information and answer a few brief questions online, you need to take a more thorough look at what's going on.  In order to apply for most legitimate scholarships, you'll need to spend some quality time completing a detailed application.  In addition, you'll most likely be asked for some of the following information:

*Transcript(s)
*One or more references
*Essay
*Employment History and possibly a resume
*Honors received,
* Extra Curricular Activities and Community Service
*Intended Major and school of attendance
*Career Aspirations/goals
*To Demonstrate Financial Need

Exercise care in selecting the scholarships you want to apply for and keep in mind that you need to watch how much information you give out about yourself.  With identity theft presenting such a challenge today, be extra cautious about giving out your social security number or your banking information including credit card numbers.  

Award notifications generally come via the mail rather than via telephone or email.  Telephone calls generally tend to be sales oriented or intended to get you to release your social security number or banking information.  Emails are often attempts at phishing.

In summary let the fact that you are the student in need of money guide you as you search for scholarships.  Use care when deciding to part with money in exchange for scholarship information because much of that information can be obtained for free via the internet.  The trade off is that you have to spend some time doing the research and you need to know how to separate the scams from the legitimate scholarships.   Be sure to look for signs that a scholarship is legitimate and be careful about giving out personal information that could compromise your identity.

Sorting through the seemingly endless amount of scholarship information available can be mind boggling.  By that I mean there are almost countless scholarship website on the internet.  There are also hundreds of books published on the subject.   But there are a number of things you can do to try to streamline the process.

First, take a personal inventory.  Figure out what you enjoy doing to help you select a college and possible major.  Also make a list of all the activities you've participated in both inside and outside of school which will help with a scholarship search.  Examples of activities that are important to list are:

• School Sports and Clubs
• Band/Orchestra
• Extra Curricular Activities such as private lessons (music, skating, acting),
          sports lessons etc.
• Religious Groups – Bible Study, Youth Group etc.
• Eagle Scouts and Venture Crew
• Summer Programs such as Study Abroad, Pre-College and Summer Camps
• Volunteer Activities
• Employment
• Honors Received

Think about the careers you are interested in and do a little research to figure out how much money you can earn by selecting different career paths.  Although you should pick a career you'll enjoy, the money you'll earn in the future is an important consideration.  College is expensive so you want to pick something that both interests you and that will lead you to produce an income consistent with the type of lifestyle you want to lead.

Second, meet with your guidance counselor and try to figure out early on which schools you are interested in attending based on your interests.  Visit those schools early in your junior year if you can.  Ideally, if you determine which schools you want to attend you'll then want to consider applying for early admission.  In most cases, you'll be eligible for more scholarships that way.  If you wait to apply for regular admission, there will be less scholarship opportunities available at that time and most likely you'll be competing with more applicants for them.

Take it from me.   I actually had all my college applications completed by the end of the summer before I started my senior year. I submitted all those applications, transcripts, essays and related materials within the first few weeks of starting my senior year.  I did this because my guidance counselor said 'The schools themselves award the most scholarship money.'  

So, I figured applying early was the easiest path to take and by having everything done so early it would take a lot of pressure off of me.  I actually had my college acceptances in hand before most of my fellow students had finished their applications. This paid off for me big time because the university I ultimately selected did indeed award me a generous scholarship.  So, my guidance counselor was right!

Third, start looking for scholarships during your junior year.  I found that many states offer their own scholarship programs.  This was the other area where I had a lot of success, so you should check what your state may have to offer by visiting the following link:

Once you are at that site, you can then scroll down the main page to find the hyperlink to the state in which you reside.  Click on the appropriate hyperlink and you'll be amazed what you find there.

Fourth, your high school guidance office may distribute a list of websites that the school recommends you visit to search for scholarships.  I recommend using some of these sites to get an idea of what's out there.  But you also need to focus on what makes you unique by looking at your hobbies, sports, your employer (as well as that of your parents) and volunteer history for example.  Then you need to search for scholarships individually based on those aspects of your background.  A few of the sites generally recommended are:

Be sure to read up on scholarship scams because unfortunately they exist.   Generally if something seems suspicious you need to research it thoroughly. I'd be a little gun shy about anyone asking me to spend money to obtain scholarship information.  For the most part, the information can be found for free but it does take a bit of time and a little research know-how.

Finally, don't forget about Financial Aide.  The federal Financial Aide site is at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and each college has their own requirements for the school's financial aid awards.  Be sure to apply as early as possible and pay particular attention to any published deadlines.
