We at DCCC are a two-year college, so we prepare students to enter a four year college or university where they may complete their eduucation. We currently offer four courses in Physics comprised of two year long sequences. One is Engineering Physics with Calculus where use the Knight textbook and the other is an Algebra based General Physics class where we use the Wilson text. In addition, Dr. Crane teaches courses in Physical Science, Astronomy and Meteorology.
We feel that being in the PTEC will allow us to get different views of education in Physics for both lectures and labs, particularly by attending the meeting and conferences as well as any newsletters or Internet information. Students from rural western Kansas are sometimes intimidated by the mathematics and problems involved in Physics, and any ideas that can be gleaned from the society to alleviate this hesitation would be extremely beneficial.
With the downturn in the economy and the devastating effect it has had on the jobs in the private sector, more people are getting into education, and we would be delighted to share in the thoughts and methods other Physics educators have learned from their experiences.
