The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh is committed to increasing the number of science teachers in K-12 education. Together with the Learning Research and development Center (LRDC) our department has developed a course called "Introduction to Physics Teaching" to make the science and engineering undergraduates aware of issues related to teaching and learning and to get them excited about teaching. More details about the evaluation of this course can be found in "Increasing interest and awareness about teaching in science undergraduates," C. Singh, L. Moin, C. Schunn, Proceedings of Phys. Ed. Res. Conference, AIP, Salt Lake City, (P. Heron, J. Marx, L. McCullough Eds.), 7-10, (2005).
Dr. Chandralekha Singh has been conducting a half-day workshop at the national AAPT meeting on "What every physics teacher should know about cognitive research". In the past, Dr. Singh has also conducted intensive summer professional development workshops for K-12 teachers in the Pittsburgh area.
