Wordy, but complete

If you buy volume 1 and 2 of this, you'll have a wealth of information at your fingertips.  Serway and Jewett are verbose, which accounts for a good portion of the 6 inch binding width of the set.  On the bright side, it explains things well, and for beginners, it's a good resource.  Many of the people I've talked to have told me that everything you need to know for the Physics GRE is in the two volume set.  They've made great references for me when writing lab reports or tutoring students, and the online accompaniment is helpful.

My intro courses also used this book, and it's pretty decent.
It's a little light in some areas, but I still occasionally refer to
it when tutoring lower division courses. For those that may
be using it (or a newer edition), you can take it to a print
shop and have them separate the chapters and rebind it for
easier carrying. I know several students that did this...
Anyway, a decent all-around intro book with good examples.

Pretty Good Book

My begining physics classes used this book. At the
time I liked it, except for its size, but hey you can't
have everything. But now when I flip through the
pages I can see a lot that isn't included.
But overall I think its a great introduction to
physics and engineering book. (Defidently get the
version with modern physics)
