Problem 12.5: Describe the effect of the added potential energy function

Please wait for the animation to completely load.

The animation shows a finite square well where a potential energy function can be added. Using the slider the bottom of the finite well can be made to vary from ∨ shaped to ∧ shaped. To see the other bound states, simply click-drag in the energy level diagram on the left to select a level. The selected level will turn red.  Restart.

Before looking at the animation:

  1. Draw the first few energy eigenfunctions for the finite well with a ∨-shaped bottom.
  2. Draw the first few energy eigenfunctions for the finite well with a ∧-shaped bottom.
  3. Once you have drawn your energy eigenfunctions, use the animation to check your results. Describe in words why the energy eigenfunctions behave the way they do.
