This web page contains an interactive simulation on static and kinetic friction on a horizontal surface.  The user can control the block's initial velocity, the force applied to it, its mass, and the coefficients of static and kinetic friction.  Through the toolbar at the bottom the free body diagram on the block can be shown,  illustrating kinetic energy, work done, and energy lost to friction.  This item includes step-by-step instructions for its use in an introductory physics classroom.

This resource is part of a larger collection of simulation-based physics modules sponsored by the MAP project (Modular Approach to Physics).
